The preference was even more pronounced in the pre-owned market, where 1,924 units, or 97.3 percent, were small cars. Suzuki led pre-owned car registrations with 681 units, including 523 Wagon Rs, followed by Toyota with 459, Nissan with 354 and Daihatsu with 350.
A similar trend was evident in the SUV market, where small crossovers of up to 1,500cc accounted for 3,099 units, or 96 percent, of August registrations. Toyota led the segment with 1,186 registrations, driven largely by the Raize and Urban Cruiser, while Honda recorded 645, including 620 Vezels. Jetour followed with 306 and Suzuki with 284.
Financing continued to play a sizeable role in purchases. The financing share for motor cars increased to 47.4 percent from 42.8 percent in July, while that for SUVs rose to 45 percent from 41.9 percent. Small-car financing stood at 42.3 percent for brand-new vehicles and 49 percent for pre-owned cars.
Meanwhile, the electric vehicle segment lost momentum in August, with total EV registrations falling 29 percent month-on-month to 5,084 from 7,170. The August figure was also below the 5,668 electric vehicles registered a year earlier.
Electric car registrations fell to 558 from 992 in July, while electric SUVs dropped to 149 from 433. Electric two-wheelers, which continued to account for the bulk of EV registrations, declined to 4,133 from 5,544.
BYD continued to dominate electric car registrations with 342 units, comprising 236 ATTO 1s, 103 Dolphin Dynamics and three Seal Comforts. Kaiyi followed with 65 units, BAW with 61 and Dongfeng with 54.
Across vehicle categories, BYD registrations fell to 498 in August from 1,320 in July, with the latest month’s tally comprising 342 cars, 148 SUVs and eight pickups.
Hybrid registrations also softened, falling to 1,942 from 2,288 in July, with hybrid SUVs accounting for 1,893 units. Toyota led with 674, followed by Honda with 631, Jetour with 297 and BYD with 99.
