Skipper and number eight Shaakib Zumri grabbed a brace as he steered Isipathana College to a hard-fought 33-10 bonus-point win over a gutsy D. S. Senanayake College in a feisty and scrappy Dialog Schools League rugby match at Royal Sports Complex yesterday (3).
The green machine was guilty of conceding an exceedingly high number of penalties throughout the game, but their ability to score off broken play and aided by a resolute defensive shift ultimately sealed the deal against a fighting Dons outfit.
D. S. for their part struggled to cash on the welter of penalties on offer and were kept scoreless after the turnaround, with referee Jeewaka Fonseka having his mitts full being forced to dish out cards with three Isipathana players sent to the bin.
Isipathana eventually upped the ante and underlined their dominance in a game where tempers flared throughout, while scoring five tries of which four were converted to a penalty try and a solitary penalty goal by the D. S.
For the Havelock Town-based school apart from the heroics of Zumri, the rest to cross the opposition whitewash were tight head prop Nevith Mewnaka, outside centre Uvindu Kodithuwakku and loose head prop Naveed Thahir, with the conversions being shared between fly-half Thenula de Costa and full back Nimantha Sandeepa.
All that the Wijerama Mawatha lads, who made a good fist of it in the first half but failed to capitalise on opportunities in the second half, could show was a 23rd minute penalty by full back Charith Samarasinghe and penalty try awarded eight minutes later by the referee.
