In a significant milestone for Sri Lanka’s maritime industry, the Ministry of Ports has announced that the Port of Colombo has recorded the highest container throughput in its history in 2025, reaching an impressive total of 8,290,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units). This marks a 6% increase over the previous year, where the port managed to handle 7,700,000 TEUs in 2024.

This remarkable achievement is the result of the concerted efforts of several key players such as Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) and East Container Terminal (ECT), operated by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), South Asia Gateway Terminal (SAGT), managed by a Chinese company and Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT), operated by India’s Adani Group. The collaboration among these entities has been crucial in enhancing operational efficiency and increasing the port’s capacity.

To commemorate this historic achievement, a special ceremony was held at the East Container Terminal. The event was led by Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Anura Karunathilaka, alongside Deputy Minister Janitha Ruwan Kodithuwakku, Ministry Secretary W.W.S. Mangala, senior SLPA officials, and other terminal heads. This gathering underscored the significance of teamwork and dedication within the maritime sector.

Looking forward, the Ministry of Ports is set to enhance transshipment and logistics facilities in 2026, aiming to solidify Colombo’s position as a central hub port in the region. With the anticipated completion of construction at both the East Container Terminal (ECT) and West Container Terminal (WCT) in 2026, the Port of Colombo is expected to accommodate a significantly larger volume of containers, further contributing to the country’s economic development.

In light of these developments, several leading global shipping companies have expressed renewed confidence in the Port of Colombo’s operations, with expectations of attracting even more international partners in the future. Minister Anura Karunathilaka has proactively convened the SLPA management along with foreign terminal operators to discuss plans and strategies for the year 2026.

During the discussions, Minister Karunathilaka highlighted the substantial financial impact of this record achievement on the national economy and conveyed the government’s gratitude to all personnel involved. He assured that the Ministry would provide full support in 2026 to ensure continued progress and success for the Port of Colombo, reinforcing its vital role in Sri Lanka’s economic landscape.
