7th National Police Commission term ends today

The three-year term of the 7th National Police Commission (NPC) is set to expire today (May 15), bringing to an end the tenure of the independent oversight body appointed in 2023.

It is learnt that the Constitutional Council has already initiated the process of selecting members for the new commission.

Until a new commission is formally appointed, the current members will continue to carry out their administrative responsibilities.

The outgoing commission was appointed on May 15, 2023, under the provisions of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution. Although the commission can comprise seven members, it functioned with five members during its tenure.

The commission was chaired by retired High Court Judge E.W.M. Lalith Ekanayake. Its other members included retired District Secretary Kanapathipillai Karunaharan, Attorney-at-Law Dilshan Kapila Jayasuriya, President’s Counsel A.A.M. Illiyas, and retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Jayantha Jayasinghe.

During its term, the commission exercised constitutional powers over Sri Lanka Police, overseeing administrative reforms, disciplinary matters, and institutional restructuring.

Meanwhile, a farewell ceremony for the outgoing commission was held yesterday at the BMICH with the participation of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya.
