The United States Embassy in Sri Lanka has issued an advisory for American citizens in the country following major global air travel disruptions caused by airspace closures in the Middle East.
In the advisory issued on March 6, the embassy said the situation remains fluid but assured that it is prepared to provide emergency assistance to U.S. citizens affected by flight cancellations.
The embassy noted that the Bandaranaike International Airport remains fully operational. However, flights passing through the Middle East have been significantly affected due to the current regional tensions. While some routes have partially resumed, travellers have been advised to exercise caution.
Passengers have been urged to check directly with their airlines for the latest updates on delays, cancellations and route changes. The embassy also noted that several commercial flight options that avoid Middle Eastern airspace remain available.
To assist travellers who may need additional time to make alternative arrangements, the government of Sri Lanka is offering a free 14-day visa extension.
For tourism-related assistance, visitors can contact the Sri Lanka Tourist Hotline by dialing 1912.
The embassy has also provided an emergency contact number for American citizens requiring urgent assistance: +94 11 202 8500. In addition, the American Citizen Services unit is offering walk-in hours from 1.00 p.m. to 2.00 p.m. from Monday to Thursday for those wishing to speak directly with a consular officer regarding disrupted travel plans.
U.S. citizens have also been encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program and follow updates from the United States Department of State for the latest travel and security information.
