The Literary Lounge: a space for readers in Sri Lanka

For many readers, finishing a book is only the beginning. The real joy often comes afterwards when talking about a character who stayed with you, debating a plot twist, sharing a favourite trope, or simply asking someone about their feelings.

It was this desire for conversation and connection that led Januli Bandara to create The Literary Lounge, a Colombo-based book club that has grown into a wider literary community. Public profiles of the organisation describe it as having evolved from a small book club into a community connecting readers, writers and creatives across Sri Lanka.

For Bandara, however, the idea began much earlier. As a child, she was drawn to the idea of a book club as a place where an introverted and creative person could meet like-minded people. Years later, while at university, she finally decided to create one herself.

What began with an Instagram account, a logo and a few interested readers has since become a community built around a simple idea: reading should bring people together, not create more pressure.
