Sumathi Holdings recently held its 20th annual book donation programme at the Kularatne Hall of Ananda College, Colombo, reaffirming its commitment to equipping the country’s next generation with the tools needed for learning and growth. Each year, the company supports the educational journeys of its employees’ children by providing essential learning materials. This year’s programme carried added significance, as Sumathi Holdings expanded its support to include 202 students from Ananda College, Colombo, and 33 students from Gurukula College, Kelaniya, who were affected by recent floods, while continuing to support 739 children of its employees, benefitting a total of 974 students.
The event was attended by Mr. Jagath Sumathipala, Chairman of Sumathi Holdings, Ms. Samantha Sumathipala, Director, Mr. Chadu Sumathipala, Executive Director, Mr. Chathula Sumathipala, Director of Business Strategy and Development and Mr. Michael Andre, Director of Sumathi Holdings. The gathering also included Dr. Priyantha Navaratne, clinical psychologist and counsellor, Mr. Lal Dissanayake, Principal of Colombo Ananda College, and Dr. Kusala Fernando, Principal of Kelaniya Gurukula College, along with other dignitaries from the education and professional communities.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Jagath Sumathipala, Chairman of Sumathi Holdings, said, “Access to quality education is the foundation of our nation’s future, and it’s our duty to ensure that the next generation is equipped to contribute meaningfully to society. In times like these, it is essential that children continue their learning journey, and this initiative is our way of ensuring that these students are empowered to become the best versions of themselves, ultimately growing into responsible citizens who will play a key role in shaping the future of our nation.”
The initiative aimed to help children remain engaged in their education at a time when many families are facing uncertainty, reinforcing the belief that access to learning should not be limited by circumstance. Over the past 20 years, Sumathi Holdings has donated schoolbooks to more than 17,800 students across the country, reflecting the scale and continuity of its commitment to education. Building on the social contributions once carried out by Dr. Milina Sumathipala, the company reaffirmed that it will continue to implement timely initiatives focused on safeguarding education and building a brighter future for Sri Lanka’s children.
