Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is set for a re-haul, with Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage confirming that discussions are currently under way with the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the possibility of placing SLC under an interim committee or an authorised official.
The Minister stated that discussions with the ICC form part of a broader plan, as the Government does not want to see Sri Lanka banned from international cricket.
This move comes in the wake of Sri Lanka’s dismal performance in the ICC T20 World Cup where, as co-hosts, they failed to qualify for a place in the semi-finals.
The Sports Minister said the move is being considered as part of ongoing efforts to address governance and administrative matters within SLC. He said it is the Government’s duty to uplift cricket, and that they will make the necessary interventions to strengthen the game to ensure its progress.
The Minister emphasised that the Government is pursuing the matter with urgency and that the President of the country has also directly intervened in the discussions.
Meanwhile, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa stated that necessary measures will be taken in the near future to meet the expectations of cricket enthusiasts in Sri Lanka.
Addressing the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing, Dr. Jayatissa said that changes in law, administration, and other related areas will be introduced.
“You love cricket, I love cricket, a majority of our citizens love cricket, even the President loves cricket. Steps will be taken in the future to make changes in the sport of cricket, fulfilling the expectations of the people,” he said.
