New Low floor bus service for persons with disabilities to start from Makumbura tomorrow

A dedicated low-floor priority bus service for persons with disabilities is set to commence tomorrow (21) from the Makumbura Multimodal Center (MMC), the Transport, Highways and Urban Development Ministry announced.

This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of promoting equal opportunities and safeguarding human dignity for all citizens, as part of the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ programme. A total of Rs. 430 million has been allocated for the project.

Sri Lanka Metro Transit Ltd. Chief Operating Officer, Chanuka Jayanga, stated that under the first phase, 10 modern, air-conditioned low-floor buses will be introduced. These specially designed buses will facilitate easy access for wheelchair users.

Each bus can carry up to 80 passengers, including 33 seats, and is equipped with safety features tailored for wheelchair users. The initial routes will connect Makumbura to Pettah and Kadawatha, passing key healthcare facilities such as Maharagama Apeksha Hospital and the National Hospital in Colombo.

Furthermore, 28 drivers from the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) have undergone specialized training to operate these accessible services, ensuring smooth and safe transportation for all passengers.
