Located at Rajagiriya, stands a unique spiritual landmark, the Sri Maha Veera Badrakali Amman Devasthanam and Rahu Bhagavan Temple. Temples dedicated to planetary deities are a rarity in Sri Lanka, and this sacred site holds the distinction of being the only temple in the country where Rahu Bhagavan is venerated as the presiding deity.
Tradition and Devotion
Established in 1991 by divine command and grace, the temple follows the revered Guru–Shishya tradition, embodying the timeless path of devotion, and the daily rituals are performed with profound reverence and discipline. Preserving traditional worship and chanting, maintaining the sacred sound and rhythm that honours the temple’s devotional lineage.
The Divine Shrines
Sri Maha Veera Badrakali Amman bestows her divine grace from the main sanctum. Alongside her, Rahu Bhagavan, enshrined with his celestial consort, radiates the energy of planetary balance and spiritual transformation. The temple also houses the Maha Meru Sri Chakra, along with sanctums dedicated to Shulini Durga, Varahi Amman, Pratyangira Devi, Ashwarooda Durga, Mahalakshmi, Saraswathi, Ganesha, Murugan, Kubera, Bhairava, and Hanuman, each representing a distinct aspect of divine energy.
The Power of Rahu
Rahu, a potent planetary force in the age of Kali Yuga, influences human experience by intensifying worldly attachments, which ultimately guide the devotee toward inner clarity. Rahu can elevate the humble to great heights, while an afflicted Rahu may bring challenges such as Kaalasarpa, Kalathra, or Naga doshas, manifesting as marital delays, family discord, financial hardship, or emotional unrest. The temple’s powerful rituals help devotees overcome such planetary afflictions through faith and divine grace.
Rituals and Offerings
Every New Moon (Amavasya): The Sri Maha Pratyangira Devi Homa is performed and this powerful ritual is performed to protect devotees from negative energies, evil influences, and psychological distress. Every Full Moon (Poya): Devotees are given the rare opportunity to pour milk over the Maha Meru Sri Chakra, Fridays during Rahu Kalam: Special Durga and Rahu Poojas are conducted to help devotees restore balance, overcome challenges, and gain mental clarity.
The Living Presence of Shakti
The Sri Maha Veera Badrakali Amman Devasthanam and Rahu Bhagavan Temple is more than a shrine; it’s a living embodiment of Shakti, the divine feminine energy. Through the grace of Rahu Bhagavan, the mind attains clarity; through the compassion of the Divine Mother, life is illuminated with peace and purpose.
The temple observes special days, including Fridays during Rahu Kalam, Amavasya, Pournami, Aashada Navarathri, Navarathri, and Maha Shivaratri. The temple is preparing for its Maha Kumbabhishekam in May 2026, a grand consecration ceremony symbolising renewal, divine grace, and the continuation of its sacred spiritual legacy.
