Sri Lanka to get Covid Vaccine before April, Lalith Weeratunga reveals vaccine plan

Chief Adviser to the President Lalith Weeratunga believes Sri Lanka will receive its first batch of vaccine for COVID-19 before the April New Year.

Speaking during an interview with Ada Derana, he said discussions in this regard are in the final stages.

Stating that the vaccine could be received by end of February or first week of March, Weeratunga said it definitely can be given to the citizens by April this year.

The President’s Chief Adviser further said that the procedure under which the vaccine will be distributed has already been formulated.

He said as per the advise of the World Health Organization, the vaccine will initially be provided to health workers, which amounts to 155,000 at present.

As per the national vaccination plan, it will be given next to the front line personnel of the tri-forces and the police, which amounts to 127,500 officers.

Pointing out that the Treasury has raised enough funds in this regard, Weeratunga said the financial arrangements for the vaccination have already been completed.
