R. A. Mahathun Challenge Trophy football

• From 25-26 April at Cooray Park

A football tournament for those aged over 45 and played for the R. A. Mahathun Challenge Trophy is set to be held on 25 and 26 April at the Cooray Park, Wellawatta.

This upcoming tournament is being organised by a set of former football players who had represented the Cooray Sports Club in Wellawatta.

R. A. Mahathun had served as the president of the Cooray Sports Club in Wellawatta for over three decades.

According to the tournament organisers the outright winners will be presented with the R. A. Mahathun Challenge Trophy plus a cash cheque worth Rs. 300,000.

The runners-up will be presented with a Trophy and a purse of Rs. 200.000 and a cash cheque for Rs. 100,00 for the third place will also be offered.

Furthermore, the organisers also intend to present cash prizes of Rs. 25,000 each to the best player of the tournament, most valuable player and the best goalkeeper.

The organisers also have made arrangements to provide board and lodging to all teams who arrive in Colombo for this tournament from a distance in excess of 100 kilometres.

All teams due to feature in this two-day football tournament should be made up of nine players with the closing date for acceptance of applications being 15 April.
