With the aim of identifying the practical problems faced by entrepreneurs and industrialists and bringing the state machinery closer to them, the ‘District Industries Sub-Committee’ meeting was held on March 26 at the Polonnaruwa District Secretariat under the patronage of the Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Sunil Handunnetti.
Several important proposals were approved to boost the industrial sector in the Polonnaruwa District. Accordingly, it was decided to expand the Laksha Uyana Industrial Park and commence its second phase in the Gallella area. It was also proposed to establish a Gem Research Laboratory in the district for the convenience of gem industrialists and to construct a Technology Service and Support Center (Technology Incubation Center) to provide technical support to food processing industrialists.
The Minister emphasized that regional industrial committees should directly intervene to remove the existing obstacles in obtaining concessional interest loan facilities provided by the government for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Also, special attention was paid to the continuous provision of fuel to industrialists and the prompt release of lands allocated for industries to the relevant entrepreneurs. Deputy Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply T.B. Sarath, Member of Parliament B.M. Sunil Ratnasiri, Member of Parliament N.R. Padmasiri Bandara and a group of government officials including the Polonnaruwa District Secretary were present on this occasion.
