The Government has announced a new initiative to extend the benefits of the Employees' Trust Fund (ETF) to private sector employees working in the transport industry.
This program aims to provide social security to workers who were previously excluded from such welfare schemes, ensuring greater stability and continuity of the island’s transport services.
Eligible employees include drivers and assistants of private buses, drivers of three-wheelers, and taxi drivers. Under the directive of Minister of Urban Development, Transport, and Highways Bimal Rathnayake, the necessary legal frameworks have been finalized to facilitate registration of these workers.
In line with this development, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed yesterday at the Ministry of Finance between the National Transport Commission (NTC) and the Employees' Trust Fund Board, marking a significant step toward implementing this inclusive welfare scheme
