“Science Against Disaster” program to strengthen Sri Lanka’s disaster preparedness

Minister of Science and Technology, Professor Krishantha Abeysena, announced that a special initiative, the “Science Against Disaster” national program, will be launched in Colombo on January 14 to enhance coordination among disaster management institutions and reduce damage during emergencies.

Speaking at a media briefing at the Government Information Department today (12), the Minister emphasized that the program aims to identify scientific and technological gaps that hinder disaster mitigation and strengthen collaboration among institutions.

Secretary to the Ministry of Science and Technology, Y.L. Mr. Mohammed Nawawi, highlighted the importance of university-level research and data in preventing disasters and the need to share this knowledge across institutions to build an effective network.

The Arthur C. Clark Center has identified over 4,000 landslide-prone areas across the island, and experts stressed that collaboration among scientists and research institutions is crucial to prevent tragedies like those caused by Cyclone Ditva last year.

Government agencies, universities, and district secretaries from affected areas will participate in the program. The initiative will not only review existing research but also aim to further develop studies to improve disaster preparedness. The program is planned to continue periodically after its first session.
