The Sri Lanka Tea Board confirmed today that tea production rose marginally by 0.57% to reach 264.1 million kg in 2025, from the 262.6 million kg recorded the year before.
All elevations were higher than last year, with High and Mid Growns in particular contributing most to the year-on-year gain. High Growns rose 1.3% from 55.7 mn kg to 56.4 million kg.
Similarly, Mediums were up 1.5% from 47.3 million kg to 48.0 million kg in 2025. Low Growns were a disappointing 159.6 million kg, equal to the previous year’s figure.
Reduced application of fertilizer by smallholder farmers and extremes of weather during the year, leading up to cyclone Ditwah in November, played a crucial part in this year's less-than-expected harvest of 264.1 million kg.
