Sri Lanka’s javelin throw champion Rumesh Tharanga reached a remarkable achievement with a superb throw of 89.37m at the Champions Track & Field Meet when he erased his own national record of 86.50m (pending ratification) at Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium Diyagama on Saturday.
The 22-year-old Tharanga delivered the record breaking distance in his last attempt after consistently clearing the 83m mark with four throws earlier in this competition. He started with a distance of 78.39m followed by 83.35m, 83.68m, 84.33m, 84.62m and his best throw of 89.37m to establish a new National record.
This was a superb effort by Rumesh Tharanga who is now sits No.1 in the top list this season, eclipsing his earlier 83.07m mark set in Australia in February. He is improving consistently in this event and strengthen his position as one of the top javelin throwers in the world.
Earlier Tharanga came to the fore at the World Championship being a finalist last year and he is the first Sri Lankan athlete to reach that stage in 19 years since Susanthika Jayasinghe’s 200m bronze medal appearance.
