- Temporary renovations 99% complete, with 100% completion in 2 weeks
The Road Development Authority (RDA) stated that around 99 per cent of roads damaged by floods and landslides caused by Cyclone Ditwah have been temporarily renovated, and the remaining sections are expected to be reopened for traffic within the next two weeks.
Speaking to The Daily Morning, the RDA Director General K.W. Kandambi said that although temporary restoration work is nearing completion, full-scale reconstruction has not yet commenced. He said that reconstruction work is scheduled to begin this year (2026), adding the RDA has already assessed the damage and made the necessary financial allocations for that purpose.
“When roads are damaged due to floods and landslides, our first priority is to clear them and open as many roads as possible for traffic. That work has now been completed. Full-scale reconstruction takes more time due to the severity of the damage to some roads, we plan to commence it immediately. The Government has allocated the necessary funds," he added.
In November of last year (2025), brought heavy rainfall and strong winds across several parts of the country, triggering widespread flooding and landslides. The severe weather disrupted daily life in many Provinces such as the Central, Uva, North Western, and North Central Provinces. The cyclone left a trail of damage across the country’s transport network, affecting highways, rural roads, bridges, and railway lines.
