Health authorities have called on the public to take precautions to control blood sugar levels during the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year festivities.
Speaking at a media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau, Consultant Endocrinologist Dr. Manilka Sumanatilleke highlighted the importance of mindful eating amid traditional celebrations.
He pointed out that popular New Year foods such as milk rice, ‘kevum’, ‘kokis’, and ‘aluwa’ are integral to the festivities. However, Dr. Sumanatilleke advised moderation, recommending that individuals consume only one type of sweet at a time. For instance, choosing a small piece of ‘aluwa’ instead of ‘kevum’ or limiting milk rice portions can help.
He also suggested replacing sugary drinks with plain tea without sugar and advised visitors to relatives to mention they’ve just eaten before indulging in sweets like ‘kokis’ and ‘aluwa’.
Dr. Sumanatilleke emphasised that these simple adjustments can significantly aid in maintaining stable blood sugar levels during the festive season, promoting better health while enjoying the celebrations.
