Island Dancer Dancesport Championship 2026 Promises a New Era of Competitive Dance Excellence

Island Dancer Sri Lanka proudly announces the Island Dancer Dancesport Championship 2026, set to take place on 18th October 2026 at the Sporting Arena  Royal MAS Arena. Designed as a full-scale dance experience, the Championship will bring together elegance, energy and artistry, as the arena undergoes a complete transformation into a ballroom setting, creating a new experience for competitive dance in Sri Lanka.

The journey towards the Championship, however, has not been without its challenges. Despite several discussions and approaches to the hotel industry, the concept initially faced resistance, with the event often being viewed primarily through the lens of immediate commercial returns. Island Dancer sees the opportunity differently.

The organisation believes Sri Lanka has the potential to become a destination for international dance tourism, attracting dancers, instructors, performers and enthusiasts from around the world. Major dance events can create an economic ripple effect that extends well beyond the venue itself, benefiting hotels, restaurants, transportation, tourism and other sectors.

This vision is already beginning to take shape. ALIF – Sri Lanka, another initiative led by award-winning Salsa instructor J D Ruban, is scheduled to bring hundreds of international dancers to the island around the same period. Initiatives such as these highlight the potential of dance as more than entertainment it can become a platform for tourism, cultural exchange and international engagement.

Island Dancer hopes the Championship will contribute to a larger movement towards placing Sri Lanka on the global dance calendar, while encouraging the hospitality and tourism industries to recognise the long-term value of international dance communities and the audiences they bring with them.

The daytime competition will run from 8.00 AM to 4.00 PM, featuring more than 200 dancers competing across multiple categories. From 7.00 PM onwards, the venue will transform into an evening celebration, with dinner, drinks and social dancing featuring the sultry rhythms of Salsa, Bachata and Kizomba, alongside Baila favourites and music by DJ Darren Diaz.

Entries for the Championship opened in the first week of August and will close in the last week of August 2026. Bringing together some of Sri Lanka's talented dancers, the event is expected to become a significant addition to the country's competitive dance calendar.

Organised by Island Dancer Sri Lanka, the country's emerging dance management and media platform, the Championship reflects its wider mission to create professional opportunities and international visibility for Sri Lankan dance talent. The platform works across artist management, professional castings, international tours, training initiatives, interviews, digital media and dance-focused content.

Through its digital platforms and interviews, Island Dancer continues to document the evolution of dance in Sri Lanka while giving dancers and industry professionals a space to share their stories and connect with wider audiences. The Dancesport Championship is an extension of that vision  bringing competition, community and opportunity together under one platform.

“Growing up watching competitions and competing locally myself back in 2010, I saw the first competition organised by Dharshan Wijesooriya, Dancefest Sri Lanka 2010. That was the day I envisioned creating my own competition one day. Seventeen years later, the opportunity arose,” said Nevindee Amarasinghe, Founder of Island Dancer, a serial entrepreneur and dancer.

The Island Dancer Dancesport Championship 2026 is ultimately more than a competition. It is a step towards creating a stronger professional ecosystem for dance in Sri Lanka and towards showing the world that the island has the talent, passion and potential to become part of the international dance community.
