Development: SL, ADB discuss priorities for 2026–2029

Sri Lanka’s development plans for the 2026–2029 period and priorities for future projects supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) were discussed at a special meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat.

The meeting was co-chaired by Secretary to the President Dr Nandika Sanath Kumanayake and ADB Country Director for Sri Lanka Shannon Cowlin, the President’s Media Division said in a statement.

The discussion was held as a preparatory meeting ahead of the ADB programme review scheduled for 5 and 6 October 2026, which will focus on the successful implementation of the bank’s annual programme for 2027.

Particular attention was given to identifying development projects that should be prioritised for inclusion in the ADB’s long-term project plans.

The meeting also focused on strengthening government ownership of programmes financed by the ADB, ensuring clear and efficient coordination between government processes and ADB procedures, and making effective use of limited concessional financing and technical assistance, the PMD noted.

Discussions also covered measures and strategies required to address challenges in accelerating Sri Lanka’s development while achieving fiscal targets within the shortest possible timeframe.

Additional Secretary to the President W D R Krishantha, Senior Assistant Secretary to the President Dr Danushka Perera and senior officials of the Asian Development Bank also participated in the meeting, according to the President’s Media Division.
