Bakery product prices remain unchanged

The All Ceylon Bakery Owners Association says bakeries across the country are facing difficulties obtaining key energy sources such as diesel, petrol, kerosene and gas, but there are no plans to increase bakery product prices at present.\

Association Chairman N. K. Jayawardena said the industry is currently experiencing problems securing fuel supplies needed for daily operations and has requested the government to introduce a suitable programme to address the issue.

He made these remarks at a press conference held at the association’s headquarters in the Raddolugama Housing Complex yesterday morning.

Jayawardena explained that about 25 percent of bakeries in Sri Lanka operate using gas, while another 25 to 30 percent rely on diesel and kerosene as energy sources. The remaining bakeries use firewood and other alternative fuels.

He noted that many bakeries usually transport diesel, petrol and kerosene in cans. However, the government has introduced regulations preventing fuel from being issued in cans, creating difficulties for bakery owners.

Jayawardena urged authorities to introduce a special arrangement allowing bakeries to obtain fuel in cans in order to continue their operations smoothly.

He also said bakery owners have been informed about the current gas shortages and price increases in the country, as well as power outages reported in several areas, which have further affected bakery operations.
