Uber rolls into Jaffna - Rides and Eats Now Available in Northern Province

Uber, Sri Lanka’s leading ride-hailing and delivery platform, today announced the launch of its services in Jaffna, marking a significant milestone in its nationwide expansion. With this launch in the Northern province, the residents as well as visitors will now have access to safer, affordable rides and on-demand food and grocery delivery, all at the tap of a button. It will also contribute to the local economy by creating new earning opportunities for local drivers, delivery partners, and merchants.

As part of this expansion, Tamil language support has been rolled out across the country, making the app experience even more accessible to millions of Tamil-speaking Sri Lankans.

Whether it’s a ride to Jaffna University, a weekend visit to Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, or a trip to the city’s beloved library, Uber Rides will make it easier to move around Jaffna quickly and affordably.  And with Uber Eats now live in the city, locals and visitors can enjoy Jaffna’s most loved dishes like crab curry, kool, and dosai, from neighbourhood favourites such as Lavin's Vegetarian Family Restaurant, Selam RR Biriyani, Akshathai Restaurant, and Mangos Indian Veg, all delivered to their doorstep with just a few taps.

Uber Eats launches with the widest-ever restaurant and grocery selection Jaffna has seen across any delivery platform. With popular local eateries and trusted grocery partners on the app, and a strong network of delivery partners across the city, Uber Eats will offer a faster and more reliable delivery experience than what customers have been used to.

Varun Wijewardane, Country Manager - Delivery, Uber Sri Lanka, said: “Launching in  Jaffna is special - this is a city with a proud food heritage and a strong sense of community. We’ve worked closely with restaurant owners and grocery partners to build a selection that truly reflects local tastes. For us, this isn’t just about delivery - it’s about creating new ways for people to access what they love while helping local businesses thrive.”

With doorstep pickups available across two-, three-, and four-wheelers, Uber Rides brings flexibility and independence to how people travel within the city. Riders can choose the option that fits their needs and wallet, all through a seamless, app-based experience. Each trip is supported by tech-driven safety features like real-time GPS tracking; sharing trip details with loved ones; driver-identity verification; in-app emergency support; and round-the-clock support assistance, ensuring greater peace of mind for both riders and drivers.

Kaushalya Gunaratne, Country Manager - Mobility, Uber Sri Lanka, said: “With the launch of Uber Rides in Jaffna, we’re bringing our ‘tap a button, get a ride’ promise to the Northern Province - making everyday travel more accessible, flexible, and dependable. Whether it’s on two wheels or four, every trip is backed by technology that prioritizes safety and convenience for both riders and drivers. This launch is a proud step forward as we continue to expand safe, reliable mobility across Sri Lanka.”

The launch in Jaffna follows Uber’s continued growth across Sri Lanka in recent months. Uber Eats has expanded to Anuradhapura, Matara, Weligama, Mirissa, and Matale, while Uber Rides has grown into several towns in the Western Province and now the Northern region — bringing its services closer to more communities across the country.
