To commemorate historic victory : 1996 world champs join hands with Indira Cancer Trust

Marking 30 years since Sri Lanka’s historic 1996 Cricket World Cup victory, an achievement etched in golden letters in the nation’s cricket history, a special commemorative programme was held on Tuesday (17) at the Indira Cancer Trust (ICT) premises in Maharagama.

This programme was organised with the full involvement of the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation and with the support of the Indira Cancer Trust, with the aim of bringing hope and light into the lives of children suffering from cancer.

The event was held under the patronage of distinguished members of the victorious 1996 Sri Lankan cricket team, including Aravinda de Silva, Sanath Jayasuriya, Ravindra Pushpakumara, Chaminda Vaas, Pramodya Wickramasinghe, Upul Chandana, and Roshan Mahanama, along with the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation, Navin Dissanayake.

The iconic 1996 Cricket World Cup trophy, an invaluable symbol of Sri Lanka’s achievement was also displayed at the Indira Cancer Trust premises on the day. 

This provided children undergoing treatment and their family members the opportunity to view the prestigious trophy, helping to uplift their spirits and emotional strength.

In addition, tokens of appreciation were presented to the players of the 1996 Sri Lankan cricket team by the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation Chairperson Navin Dissanayake.

In parallel with the commemoration, an official Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation and the Indira Cancer Trust to provide support to children battling cancer and their families.

Established in 2016, the Indira Cancer Trust is a leading Sri Lankan organisation dedicated to supporting families facing cancer and other serious illnesses.

It provides patient care support, psychosocial assistance, awareness programmes, and accommodation facilities for families who travel long distances for treatment. Through a wide range of initiatives, the Trust works closely with hospitals and communities across the country to ensure compassionate and dignified support for those affected by serious illnesses.

Established in 1981, the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation plays a significant role not only in the development of cricket in the country but also in carrying out various social initiatives. 

Under the guidance of its Chairperson, arrangements for coordinating the participation of

players and the exhibition of the World Cup trophy for this commemorative event were successfully organised.
