St. Mary’s Jaffna shock saunders

St. Mary’s Sports Club, Jaffna, delivered a stunning performance to beat the much-fancied Saunders Sports Club, Colombo, and clinch the Sri Lanka Football Federation Champions Cup knockout final held under floodlights at the Race course Stadium in Colombo recently.

The grand final ended in a thrilling 1-1 draw in regulation time before St. Mary’s held their nerve to prevail in the penalty shootout 3-1, showing composure under extreme pressure.

This triumph by St Mary’s SC was significant as they became the first team from the Northern and Eastern region to claim a major national club football title.

The tournament was organised by the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) under the stewardship of its President Jaswar Umar and his able team of officials.
