SLIIT MATHFEST 2025 showcased analytical thinking through collaborative problem solving

MATHFEST 2025, held at the SLIIT Auditorium on Friday 6th May, was an exhilarating celebration of mathematical excellence, demonstrating the power of analytical thinking and collaborative problem-solving.

The third consecutive edition of MATHFEST , organized by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, in  the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences, SLIIT gathered GCE Advanced Level students from 45 schools from  Colombo, Gampaha, and Kalutara districts to engage in a challenging competition.

Thurstan College, Colombo, emerged as the champions of MATHFEST 2025. The outstanding runners-up included Bandaranayake Central College, Veyangoda, Pasyala Maha Vidyalaya, Pasyala and Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo 7. All participating students received certificates and prizes in recognition of their efforts.

The event showcased a range of mathematical problems, designed to test students’ abilities of speed and accuracy under pressure. The competition concluded with great success, sparking a deeper appreciation of mathematics as the queen of all sciences.

All participants demonstrated impressive skill and perseverance. Their achievements reflect the importance of events that are beyond competitions, instead serving to influence and inspire students to pursue excellence and critical thinking.

The competition comprised an intense computer-based multiple-choice round, followed by an on-stage buzzer round that required teamwork and quick thinking. Students showcased enthusiasm, intellectual rigor, and a spirit of healthy competition, with each team working hard to untangle complex problems collaboratively.

Distinguished guests who graced the occasion included the Chief Guest, Ms. Ayodhya Iddawela Perera, Managing Director, Sampath Bank PLC. The presence of dignitaries affirmed the event’s national importance of the event and connected the academic domain with industry perspectives on education and innovation.

Importantly, MATHFESTt 2025 was an arena where young minds could experience firsthand the critical skills of logical reasoning, creative problem-solving, and effective communication. These attributes are essential in mathematics but also in various other fields that rely on analytical thinking.

Prof. Sarath Peiris, Head /Department of Mathematics and Statistics, added his thoughts on the event “Mathematics makes your life easy. Analytical and logical thinking are the key activities in mathematics. MATHFEST creates an environment  to foster analytical and logical thinking through solving mathematical problems as a team.”

Elevating the understanding and appreciation of mathematics, the competition contributed to highlighting the importance of critical thinking and a disciplined approach being highly valued to problem-solving. MATHFEST 2025 provided an opportunity for students to challenge themselves and to celebrate the beauty and power of mathematics.
