The Government yesterday (26) signalled the need to import key rice varieties, including samba and keeri samba, as shortages and black market activity threaten supplies ahead of the festive season.
Speaking at a special press conference held at the Government Information Department yesterday (26), Commissioner General of Essential Services (CGES) Prabath Chandrakeerthi said that black market prices have been observed for samba and keeri samba rice, and that even at these inflated prices, the rice varieties are difficult to obtain. He added the Committee on Food Safety, appointed by the President, will ensure the import of other grains that are also in short supply.
He further noted that price hikes should not be observed for any essential goods except those resulting from increased transport costs, and the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) will take legal action in such instances.
The prices of essential goods have meanwhile surged in the market following the recent increase in fuel prices, traders say. Wholesale dealers in Pettah report that the cost of key items such as lentils, dried fish and coconut oil has risen significantly. In response, the CAA has launched island-wide raids and investigations to curb unfair practices targeting consumers.
Officials warn that some traders are attempting to create artificial shortages by hoarding essential food items, while also raising prices unreasonably. To prevent irregularities during the festive season, the CAA has deployed all investigation officers for continuous duty, including weekends and public holidays. Meanwhile, the general public has been urged to report any unfair practices or market irregularities via the 1977 hotline.
Chandrakeerthi also added that officials will meet with the plantation community and their unions tomorrow (28) to document the issues that they are currently facing.
The measures come amid growing public concern over the supply of essential food items during the festive season.
