Asian Games 2026 Men’s Hockey Qualifier Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh 3–2 to record second straight win

Sri Lanka recorded their second consecutive victory in the Asian Games 2026 Men’s Hockey Qualifier by defeating Bangladesh 3–2 in a closely contested match played in Bangkok, Thailand.

The tournament, featuring nine Asian nations, is being held from April 2–10.

Sri Lanka had earlier opened their campaign with a comfortable 3–1 win over Uzbekistan and continued their strong form with this victory over Bangladesh.

The win is particularly significant as it marks Sri Lanka’s first victory over Bangladesh in nearly 20 years, with their previous win coming in 2006 at the South Asian Games in Colombo Edition.

Competing in Group ‘B’ alongside Bangladesh, Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka faced a tough challenge, with the match remaining competitive throughout. The first period ended 1–1, while Sri Lanka led 2–1 at halftime and maintained the same scoreline at the end of the third period before securing a 3–2 win at full time.

Sri Lanka’s goals were scored by Seran Bothale (6th minute), Kusal Weerappuli (16th minute) and Suresh Rathnayaka (49th minute). Kusal Weerappuli was named Man of the Match for his performance.

Bangladesh responded through goals by Islam Ashraful (13th minute) and Islam Amirul (49th minute).

Sri Lanka will play their final Group ‘B’ match against Chinese Taipei tomorrow.
